Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the incarnation/birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God. But why did Jesus come to earth? Angel Gabriel answered this question in the Holy Bible:
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)
He said that the Virgin Mary would miraculously conceive and give birth to Jesus. He also ordered to call Mary’s child Jesus (Saviour) as He would save people from sin. Sin is a greater disease than covid-19, in fact, the greatest disease. It brought into the world not only suffering but also death. Today all human beings suffer at the cruel hands of natural disasters and epidemics and are ultimately swallowed by death. This is all because of sin.
In fact, all the sufferings that we see on earth are just the shadows of eternal punishment in hell for our sins. All human beings are by nature sinful and are headed for everlasting hell. You don’t believe me regarding sin? Who teaches little children to lie, deceive and be jealous? Do the parents or the teachers teach them? No, they have it in their nature. This is the condition of every human being. We are, by nature, slaves of sin. Jesus came to liberate us from the power of sin, save us from hell and reconcile us to God.
How did He do it? By living a perfectly holy life and dying for us on the cross! Yes, Jesus died to pay for our sins and rose back from the grave on the third day. When Jesus died on the cross, death died and when He rose from His tomb on the third day, He proved that He has the power to forgive sins and give eternal life in heaven to everyone who believes in Him.
